Thunderstorms tore through Latvia's eastern regions Wednesday night

The Latgale and Sēlija regions of Latvia were hit by powerful thunderstorms on the evening of August 30, carrying large hail, report eyewitnesses.

Hail has affected several parishes of Jēkabpils municipality and the surroundings of Daugavpils.

In Daugavpils, 38 liters of water per square meter have fallen in one hour, which is about half the norm of the whole month.

Thunderstorms also were severe in Vidzeme and Latgale. Around 15,000 residents were left without electricity.

In warning of severe thunderstorms, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) issued an orange alert in force until six in the morning on Thursday.

Overall, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received 47 calls related to the storm. 24 of them were in Latgale and 18 in Vidzeme. Most of the calls related to trees falling on roads, cars, and other stuctures.
