Warning in place for high temperatures across Latvia Friday

A yellow warning (potential danger) for extreme heat is in effect throughout Latvia on Friday, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) has announced.

From midday in Latvia intensive heat is expected with air temperatures increasing up to a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius. On Saturday, the heat will linger in eastern Latgale region to a maximum of around 28 C, but the rest of the country will no longer be on a yellow alert.

Friday will be characterized by sunny weather with a slow wind in Rīga where the temperature will reach 30 Celsius.

Local heat records for August 30 will likely be set in some places in Latvia today. The nationwide heat record for August 30 was set in 1992 in Dagda, where the temperature reached 31.7 degrees Celsius.

The weekend is expected to be somewhat cooler with rain showers in many places, but at the start of next week warmer weather will return, according to the latest forecasts.
