Blizzard conditions to persist across Latvia Wednesday

The blizzard that arrived in Latvia Tuesday afternoon will continue intermittently throughout Wednesday, according to latest forecasts.

At times, the sun will appear between the clouds, but snow and high winds are expected throughout the country.

A strong westerly wind will blow in Kurzeme, and gusts will reach 15-20 meters per second, on the coast up to 22-25 meters per second. Maximum daytime air temperatures will hover around freezing point between -1 Celsius and +2 Celsius.

"Latvijas valsts ceļi" (Latvian State Roads, LVC) reports on difficult driving conditions Wednesday morning, especially around Rēzekne and Ludza in the east of the country.

Difficult driving conditions on the country's main highways are:

  • Tallinn highway (A1) along the entire route;

  • Vidzeme highway (A2) from Riga to Vangaži and from Līgatne to Veclaicene;

  • Valmiera highway (A3) from Brasla bridge to Valka

  • Riga bypass (Baltezers-Saulkalne) (A4)

  • Riga bypass (Salaspils-Babīte) (A5) 

  • Daugavpils highway (A6) 

  • Bauska highway (A7) 

  • Jelgava highway (A8) 

  • Liepāja highway (A9) 

  • Ventspils highway (A10) 

  • Liepāja–Lithuanian border (Rucava) highway (A11) 

  • Jēkabpils–Rēzekne–Ludza–Russian border (Terehova) (A12) from Jēkabpils to Varakļani

  • Russian border (Grebneva)–Rēzekne–Daugavpils–Lithuanian border (Medumi) (A13) from Rušenica to Medumi;

  • Daugavpils bypass (A14)

  • Rēzekne bypass road (A15)

  • Regional highway Tīnūži–Koknese (P80)

State Police said Wednesday morning they had registered 167 road traffic accidents during the previous 24-hour period, in which 8 people were injured and one killed.
