Blizzard disrupts air and ground traffic

Several flights to Riga Airport have been diverted and a number have been cancelled or delayed due to the strongest blizzard this season. As snow keeps falling over Riga accompanied by blustery winds, traffic is very slow and there have been several accidents.

Flights cancelled, delayed and diverted

According to the Riga International Airport website, a number of incoming and outgoing flights have been cancelled with some diverted after not being able to land.

Delays and service interruptions can be expected throughout the rest of the day, airport representative Laura Karnīta told Latvian Radio.

Driving conditions are bad, especially in Riga where several accidents accompanied by heavy snowfall have left some streets virtually undrivable.

Residents are advised to opt for using public transportation instead of driving. Motorists in Rīga can use public transportation for free if they carry their vehicle registration certificate with them.
