Chilly weather week awaits in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

The clocks may have gone forward, but assumptions that we are now into Spring are due to be tested this week with temperatures predicted to plummet, particularly at night.

This week the weather in Latvia will be cold, with the thermometer dipping as low as -10 Celsius at night, according to the latest forecasts.

Monday will be the warmest day of the week, after which the thermometer will head south.

During Monday the sun will shine though clouds will bring rain in the afternoon, mainly in the eastern part of the country. The wind will be a slow to moderate south-westerly, which at night will turn to the west and will increase in gusts to 15-18 m/s, along the coast, but the day will be relatively warm, up to +10 C or even +12 C in some places.

On Tuesday the weather will be generally cloudy with a few sunny spells, but at times the sky will clear. The day may start with sleet and snow. A slow to moderate north-westerly wind will blow in the morning. The air temperature at night will be +1 C to -4 C, while in daylight hours its maximum will be in the range of 0 to +4 C, slightly cooler in Vidzeme region.

Atmospheric pressure will rise slightly on Wednesday and calm weather will be in place. A variable amount of clouds is expected. It will also get a little snowy at night. A slow north wind will blow, but in the second half of the night the wind will turn from the west. When colder air enters Latvia, the air temperature Tuesday night and Wednesday morning could fall as low as -11 C, while the maximum during the day will be -1 C to + 3 C.

In the second half of the week, the  weather will be determined by a high pressure area that should spell calm and dry weather. But the clear skies spell more frigid temperatures at night. The thermometer bar will again drop to -10 C or -12 C during the night, and will not rise above the +6 C during the day.

Longer-term forecasts show that the cold weather in Latvia will remain at least until April 10. After that, the weather will hopefully regain some spring in its step.
