Expect plenty of snow this week in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

This week will be rich in snowfall, with two big blizzards expected to be among the strongest in the past four years, according to forecasts by LSM's weatherman Toms Bricis.

There will already be heavy snowfall on Monday especially in the east of Latvia and it will continue until Tuesday morning, bringing a total of 10-20 centimeters of fresh snow, less in Kurzeme. The strong wind will lead to snow piling and smaller roads and streets can be impossible to drive out of.

After the blizzard subsides, frost will intensify on Wednesday night, the air temperature will fall to -3 C to -8 C. The temperature will remain around zero on the coast in Kurzeme, while in some places in Vidzeme and Latgale the temperature will fall to -10 C.

The next cyclone will reach Latvia on Thursday and this time the blizzard will come from Kurzeme. It is highly likely that there will be even more snow in the second half of the week. Over the weekend, the wind will grow slower but the temperature will fall to around -10 C in the mornings, in Vidzeme and Latgale to -15 C.

Longer-term forecasts show that from around December 10 it will become considerably warmer.
