Frosty week probably ahead in Latvia

Take note – story published 5 years ago

Earlier predictions that this week's weather would see-saw between frost and thaw have been revised by forecasters who now believe it will be a more stable - and colder - week.

On Monday and Tuesday, air temperatures will be just a few degrees below freezing point, but on Wednesday and Thursday, the frost will intensify as the skies clear, and the wind will be very slight.

The air temperature will fall to -7 C to -12 C degrees in the mornings, though the western Kurzeme region will be a few degrees warmer in Kurzeme. Conversely in the central and eastern parts of Vidzeme, as well as in Latgale, the air temperature could plunge to -20 C.

The brief very cold snap will likely be broken temporarily on Friday and Saturday when an Atlantic cyclone reached Latvian shores, bringing snow, sleet, rain and stronger winds. The air temperature will be from +4 C on the Kurzeme coast to -4 C in the east of Vidzeme.

In the longer term though, the frosty tendency is likely to remain in place for the rest of January, after which February is generally the coldest month of the year.
