Heavy rainfall causes localized flooding in parts of Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

As expected, heavy rainfall has already caused flooding in some places in central and eastern Latvia, and more rain is expected during the rest of Tuesday.

By 14:00 the town of Madona had already recorded 64 millimeters of rain, with similar amounts falling in other parts of Vidzeme and Latgale regions.

Precipitation was a more modest 24 millimeters in the center of Riga. Meanwhile, in most of Kurzeme region it has not rained at all.

Several flooded streets have been closed in Jelgava, and in many places in Zemgale and Sēlija residents report flooded gardens.

Overnight, it will continue to rain in many places in Vidzeme and Latgale, but relief should come Wednesday morning when the rain clouds will finally leave the east of the country in Alūksne, Balvi and Ludza districts.

For the time being, farmers are quite hopeful about the grain and rapeseed harvest, and there are no predictions about the impact of these rains yet, it is only hoped that the harvest and sown fields will not be affected as much as in the August 2017 floods – which also gave rise to this memorable video from one Latgale farmer.
