On Monday afternoon a rare waterspout was observed in the sea by Liepāja, while a thunderstorm in Aizpute produced so much hail it seemed to blanket the earth. Both are rare occurrences in Latvia and were documented heavily by social media users, reported LSM's weather man Toms Bricis.
Several waterspouts have been observed in Latvia's coastal waters as the sea has warmed up during summer while the weather in the last few days is quite cold.
On Monday it hailed in several places in Latvia, however it was particularly intense in Aizpute with pellets of hail with a maximum diameter of about 2 cm all but blanketing the ground.
