Take note – story published 2 years ago

Monday will see the start of a rainy spell in Latvia, according to latest forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

During the day the skies will be cloudy all over the country, rain is expected in many places with sleet and even some snow in eastern districts where a layer of snow will start to form by evening.

Drivers should be aware that roads could become slippery this week with patches of ice and snow.

A southerly to southwesterly wind will increase in strength, gusting up to 12–17 meters per second. In the evening on the Kurzeme coast this could reach up to 24 meters per second. A yellow weather warning is in place along parts of the coast as a result of expected high winds.

The maximum air temperature Monday will be an unspectacular 2 Celsius to 6 Celsius, with around 4 C expected in Rīga..

Further forecasts show that precipitation will be frequent this week. The total amount of precipitation in Latvia this week will be from 15–25 millimeters in the east of the country to 30–50 millimeters in the west. The climatic norm for the whole of April is 36 millimeters, so it looks like being a wet one.

Rain and sleet are expected all over the country on Tuesday with the early hours likely to bring particularly heavy downpours, but later in the morning the wind will gradually turn from the west and northwest and begin to subside. The air temperature at night and during the day will be in the range of 0 C to + 4 C.

As the cyclone recedes, weather will improve slightly on Wednesday, though it will still be cloudy and rainy. The wind will ease off and during the day the air will warm to a maximum of + 6 C.

Unfortunately, the week will end as it began, with the approach of a fresh cyclonic system from the west. On Thursday the wind will start to intensify and on Friday it will be 15-20 m/s in gusts throughout the country. During the night the air will cool down to -2 C to + 4 C, but during the daylight hours it will warm up to + 3 C to + 8 C.

At the weekend, the effects of the cyclone will gradually diminish. The wind will subside and precipitation is expected only in some areas and daytime temperatures of + 2 C to + 8 C.
