Also Skrīveri measured five centimeters of snow on the ground remaining, whereas in Daugavpils in Latgale, Zosēni in Vidzeme and Dobele in Zemgale province only two centimeters were left.
The streets of Riga were wet and foggy by midnight Friday with clumps of snow left only around some lamp- and sign-posts.
In western Kurzeme province snow was completely melted with a steady rain coming down. Ventspils measured the land’s warmest temps at +5 degrees Celsius. Elsewhere in Latvia the temperature is above zero degrees freezing, except for the highlands of central Vidzeme as well as the hilly lake districts of Latgale, where the snow may continue during the day Saturday.
The skies above Latvia will be behind heavy cloud cover, with mostly hazy and foggy weather, occasional rain, possibly heavy fog by evening.
Winds will be slow, if present at all. The weather conditions are currently under the influence of a high-pressure zone, with an atmospheric front stuck over Latgale.
Related to the messy weather conditions, the Road Police report that the single snowy day caused an increase in the number of traffic accidents, with a total of 150 mishaps registered, sixteen of them involving human injury. The Riga region accounted for 98 of these accidents, and eleven of the persons hurt in the crashes.
Forecasts for the following few days call for continued slushy weather customary for the time of year.
Drivers are warned to beware of overnight freezing on the roads and reduce their commuting speed and caution at the wheel accordingly!
