'Tropical' Thursday on the way in Latvia

Annual temperature records might tumble again on Thursday February 24, according to the latest forecasts, only instead of the sub-zero records of recent weeks, this one will be well into positive territory.

On Thursday, the sunniest and warmest weather is expected in Kurzeme region and the central part of the country, where the temperature could reach as much as + 13 degrees Celsius, but on the exposed sea shore and in the east of the country it will only get up to around + 7 degrees.

The current national heat record on February 25 is +12.2 C, recorded in 1990.

As the weekend aproaches it will get cooler again. On Friday the daytime temperature will reach +3 to + 8 C, and on Saturday and Sunday it will be 1-2 degrees lower, with night-time tmperatures possibly falling back below zero.

Due to the warm weather, the snow cover will melt rapidly, and rivers will rise rapidly, bringing the possibility of flooding. Conditions on the roads are also likely to be slippery with pools of standing water in places, so drivers are urged to proceed with care.
