Weather week in Latvia: windy but mainly mild, except Wednesday morning

Take note – story published 4 years ago

This week promises to be fairly warm for the season, with just one brief chilly interlude on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, according to forecasters.

On Monday, weekend storm conditions will abate slightly. There will be occasional sunshine all over the country, but there will also be episodes of rain, hailstorms and even possible thunderstorms in western Kurzeme region, forecasts show.

Southwesterly winds will gust at 9-14 meters per second in land, and along the coast at up to 18 meters per second. The maximum air temperature will be in the range +5 Celsius to + 8 C.

On Tuesday, the southwesterly wind will swing around to come from the north west and north and along the coast again will reach around 20 meters per second. Temperatures in the first part of the day will be from +2 C to + 6 C degrees, but in the late afternoon temperatures will start to fall, creating potentially perilous driving conditions as roads become slippery.

Overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday the wind will calm, the sky will clear, and temperatures will continue to fall steadily to around - 6 C early Wednesday morning in many places, and in Vidzeme and Latgale regions it will be colder still at -7 C to - 10 C. The day will be clear without rain, while southerly and southeasterly winds will return, bringing warmer conditions again, so that the temperature will see-saw oce again to between -2 C and + 3 C.

According to forecasts, conditions should then settle for the rest of the week into a pattern of rain spells, southerly gusty winds and temperatures between -2 and +6 Celsius.

And a reminder: you should be running winter-spec tires on your car now, with a minimum 4mm of tread. Police are conducting spot checks and a failure will result in a potentially costly need to re-sit a technical inspection.
