Weekend weather: plenty of rain

Take note – story published 3 years ago

The weekend of September 5-6 promises to be somewhat less than a classic, weather-wise.

According to LSM weatherman Toms Bricis and his meteorological confrères, while Friday night will see rain only in some places in Kurzeme, by in the middle of Saturday a wide and strong rain zone will reach Kurzeme and will proceed to take advantage of the relaxed weekend mood to spread across the rest of the country, depositing prodigious amounts of the wet stuff as it goes upon all persons, be they just or unjust.

The sunniest and warmest weather of le week-end is expected at noon on Saturday and in the early afternoon in Vidzeme and Latgale, before the arrival of said rain zone.

On Saturday night, the sky will clear somewhat, but during Sunday it will be a case of 'nice weather for ducks' yet again as the downpour resumes. A game of chess might be a good way to pass the time?

The prevailing wind over the weekend will be a moderate southwesterly of the kind familiar to salty sea dogs from time immemorial, though strong wind gusts of up to 15-17 meters per second are possible. Any topsails you have might need to be reefed, and checking your bilge-pumps is advised, though doubling the watch is probably not necessary.

The daytime air temperature on Saturday afternoon will be in the range of +16 Celsius to + 21 C, while Sunday will be two or three degrees colder.

Next week the weather will remain unstable with a mixture of rain, sunshine and slightly lower temperatures that the cynically-inclined might suspect to be a case of forecasters hedging their bets. "Frosts are not expected" is as close as we can find to a definitive statement, and it's hardly a bold one.
