White Christmas in store?

Take note – story published 9 years ago

The Christmas holidays will see a sharp drop in air temperatures, while most of the land will remain covered by snow, forecasts the state meteorology service.

During the second half of the day Wednesday a small cyclone will approach Latvia, bringing a broad band of moisture in form of rain and wet snow which will eventually change over into snow on Christmas eve.

It will snow heavily at times overnight to Christmas day, causing accumulations between 6 to 10 centimeters. Winds will pick up speed, causing blizzard conditions at times.

The cyclone will pull in colder air, forcing the mercury to dip downward.

While air temperatures on the evening of December 24 will stay just below zero, by December 26 overnight lows will reach down to between -7 and -12 degrees Celsius, with slightly warmer temperatures on the coast of western Kurzeme province.

As daytime highs are not expected to rise above the freezing mark on December 25 and 26, the snow cover should remain for several days, delivering Latvia a white Christmas this year.
