Windy weekend ahead in Latvia

Take note – story published 2 years ago

Weather conditions will be rapidly changing over the weekend, according to forecasts by weatherman Toms Bricis.

After a windy Friday, the night and Saturday morning will be calm but in the middle of the day the wind will rise again starting from the west. On Saturday afternoon and evening, there will be a blizzard throughout the country, sleet on the coast.

The blizzard will soon turn into thaw, already on Saturday evening in Kurzeme and on Sunday in the rest of the country. Air temperatures will rise to +2 C to +6 C on the night to Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, evening and night to Sunday, the southwest wind gusts in Latvia will reach 15-20 meters per second (m/s), coastal 20-24 m/s, near Liepāja to 25-27 m/s.

In these weather conditions, it is recommended that you refrain from driving and take extra precautions if you have to drive. The wind can do damage to trees, roofs, and power lines.

Thaw and rain on Sunday night can lead to a rapid rise in water levels, especially in Kurzeme.

By the beginning of next week, the wind will grow slower, and temperatures will mostly be below zero.
