Schrödinger's Russians: nobody knows if they are in Latvia or not

Most of the figure is accounted for by the apparent departure of Russian citizens whose permanent residence permit expired in September, which meant they were removed from the population register. But it is impossible to state with any certainty whether they have actually left, Rus.LSM.lv writes in a special report December 21.

Rīga hotel focuses on couples and outpatients in bid to weather crisis
"The coronavirus poses no obstacle to couples, and we do see some of them here. At times, outpatients from the nearby Stradiņš Hospital arrive too. These are the main two groups of clients we have right now," says Valdis, the owner of a small 14-room hotel in Rīga's picturesque Āgenskalns neighborhood. Many of the competing hotels have closed shop, but this hotel, which opened five years ago, is still open in a building that served as living quarters for working-class people a hundred years ago.

However, it is now up to the Enterprise Register to rule whether the meeting, which was held inside a black van at the company's factory, took place legitimately, reports Rus.lsm.lv.

Hotels in Jūrmala reduce prices as New Wave festival passes by

The New Wave pop music festival, held in Jūrmala from 2002 to 2014, has moved to Sochi due to the political climate (and a few of the artists being barred from entering Latvia). That's why hotel reservations in Jūrmala have become much cheaper on the dates when the festival was to be held. On average, the prices are two times cheaper than last year, but in some cases it's evident that hotels had overcharged for 7 times when the city was "on the wave".

Machine plant near standstill as demand dwindles in war-torn Donbass

The machine-building plant Jelgavas mašīnbūves rūpnīca (JMR) is facing a possible forced shut-down of production because the bulk of its orders from southeastern Ukraine’s coal mining fields and metallurgical plants have ceased due to the war-torn region’s shattered economy, where demand for the Jelgava-produced heavy equipment has all but disappeared.
