Power utility named best employer

State-run companies dominated annual rankings of the best employers in Latvia carried out by the recruitment firm Working Day Latvia.

Power utility Latvenergo topped the list for the third year in a row, in the survey which has been carried out annually since 2007 and a striking 8 out of the top 10 companies in the list were either fully or partly state-owned.

The two exceptions are both foreign-owned: Swedbank of Sweden and Norwegian fuel giant Statoil.

The full list of the top ten employers in 2014 was:

1) Latvenergo
2) Lattelecom
3) LMT (Latvian Mobile Telephones)
4) Swedbank
5) Latvian State Forests
6) Statoil
7) AirBaltic
8) Latvian Gas
9) Latvian Central Bank
10) Latvian Railways

The rankings took into account various criteria from pay rates to benefits packages and holiday allowances.

Working Day's marketing director Maris Silinieks said that following the economic crisis of 2008-10, which saw large-scale layoffs in both the public and private sectors, the reputations of major employers were "stabilizing" among potential employees.
