The Latvian government decided to announce the state of emergency on the border with Belarus on August 10, 2021, until November 10, 2021 due to the influx of refugees trying to cross the border.
The state of emergency has been extended three times before: until February 10, 2022, until May 10, 2022, and until August 10, 2022. The state of emergency is in force in the municipalities of Ludza, Krāslava, Augšdaugava, and Daugavpils.
According to the Interior Ministry, since August 10, 2021, a total of 6,777 persons have been prevented from illegally crossing the border. The formal state of emergency allows the border guard to act more freely in the preventive actions to deter illegal migrants.
