The University of Latvia (LU) plans to increase tuition fees in the new academic year 2021/2022, the rector of the university, Indriķis Muižnieks, told Latvian Radio April 23.

He explained that the development of remote studies requires new investments in both technology and teaching staff. “It is a need for the quality level of the [studies] to be maintained. The increase in tuition fees will be less than 10%, even less than 7%,” said Muižnieks. “With next autumn, an increase of €150-200 could be expected.”

The increase in tuition fees would affect new and not existing students. This is the agreement with the Student Council of LU.

He also acknowledged that the number of students has increased in recent years. Due to Covid-19's spread over the past year,  it is no longer so easy to go to study abroad. Data from October last year show that the number of students has increased by nearly 1,000 in the last two years. In particular, the number of foreign students has increased.
