Russia claims to have bust Latvian arms smuggler

Russia’s Federal Security Services have detained nine persons under suspicion of illegally transporting weapons from Latvia to Russia, including one citizen of Latvia, according to a statement released on the service’s website Thursday.

The announcement claims the detention of an international organized crime group involved in transporting weapons from Latvia to Russia’s central and northwestern regions.

A citizen of Latvia was arrested at the moment of handing off the weapons in Pskov region, said to have been responsible for getting the shipment across the state border. Also held were three citizens of Russia, said to be the organizers of the criminal activity as well as five others with knowledge about it.

An assortment of weapons, parts, explosives and munition were confiscated. According to the Pskov regional information agency the group in detention are just one segment of a much larger Security Service operation. The weapons are said to have come from the EU and intended for shipment to Ukraine.
