Rīga Midsummer week event guide

The time of Latvian pagan, traditional, and modern Midsummer (Līgo, Jāņi) celebrations has come. Here is a guide for events of various sorts taking place in the capital Rīga for the whole week.

Other cities, towns and districts will also be staging their own celebrations – we'll bring you some of those in coming days.

The Rīga program is accessible on vasara.riga.lv.

Monday, June 19:

Līgo garden at the Vērmanes garden with several "activity stations" will be open all day. Midsummer flower-crown weaving classes, lessons of traditional songs and dances, a crash course in herbs and torch workshops will be on offer. A concert will conclude the evening.

A pre-Midsummer Līgo song concert takes place at 18:00, with more Midsummer-themed activities like the making of traditional Jāņu cheese.

Thursday, June 22:

The traditional Herb Market will take place all day in the center, Doma Square, starting 9:00. The market will have flowers and plants from Latvian meadows as well as a culture program.

Friday, June 23 to Saturday, June 24:

On the day of Midsummer celebration, three popular-traditional events with singing, bonfires, and dancing will take place in the city: Mežaparks Green Theater, Grīziņkalns park, and Dzegužkalns Park. All celebrations will formally start at 20:00 and go on until the last one standing.

Happy Midsummer! Priecīgus Jāņus!
