Rīga Easter events guide

Four days of easter holidays give plenty of opportunities for celebration, whether your emphasis is religious, folkloric or simply recreational. While this selection concentrates on the capital city, rest assured that you will be ale to find more easter events happening right across the country.  

Art nouveau easter

From March 26 to April 7, every day, (except Monday), the "Art Nouveau Easter" exhibition will be held at the Riga Art Nouveau Center museum, where you can examine Easter-themed decorations and items from the museum collection. Furthermore, the apartment interior will be decorated with pieces by the artist Tamāra Čudnovska, who drew her inspiration from historical samples of the early 20th century.

Good Friday concert with Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Rīga

At this concert on Good Friday, we're asked to slow down and listen to our inner voice, contemplate eternal questions and pray for world peace. The Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Rīga are both excellent. Soloists include Nora Kalniņa (soprano) and Vitālijs Stankevičs (bass) with baton duties performed by conductor Sigvards Kļava. The program at Rīga Dome Cathedral (19:00) includes motets by Felix Mendelssohn, Pascal Dusapin, Marcel Dupré, and Mārtiņš Viļums.

Other Good Friday concerts

Another Good Friday concert "Contemplation" takes place at the Small Guild (Amatu Street 5) on March 29 at 16:00. Flutist Dita Krenberga and harpist Dārta Tisenkopfa-Muselli will perform. Entrance is free.

At 17:00 at the culture center "Ziemeļblāzma", the concert "Ilona Bagele at Easter" will take place with opera singer Ilona Bagele, Ilze Ozoliņa on the piano, Svetlana Okuņa on the violin, and Inga Ozola on the cello. Free tickets must be claimed at the Biļešu Paradīze seller cash offices or bilesuparadize.lv.

Later, at 19:00, at the Rīga St. John's Church (Skārņu Street 24), a free concert will be performed by the orchestra Rīga and the Rīga Saxophone Quartet.

Easter fair in Vērmanes gardens

The Vērmanes Garden public park will host an Easter Fair featuring more than 50 local craftspeople, artists and designers with clothes, accessories, jewelry, candles, toys, and more all on offer as well as plenty of tasty Easter treats. There will be exciting music and an Easter picture wall where you can take Easter photos and selfies.

St John Passion in Tornakalns

Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion is perhaps the greatest Easter-inspired work of the musical canon and this performance in the Rīga Luther Church, Tornakalns, should be memorable. Conductor Andris Veismanis is one of the most outstanding interpreters of early music (including Bach) in Latvia. The performance takes place March 30 at 15:00.

Easter at the Open-air ethnographic museum

For a traditional folk celebration of this period of natural rebirth, the Open-Air Museum will host a large craft market, egg dyeing and rolling, swinging on large swings, folk dances and songs on March 31. Events will take place 10:00-16:00.

Easter concert 'Hallelujah!'

On March 31 at 16:00 the Easter concert "Hallelujah" will be held in the Great Hall of the Mazā Ģilde culture center right in the middle of the Old Town. The ancient music ensemble "Ludus" (artistic director Māra Birziņa), Rūdis Cebulis (soprano), and Beatrice Vilde (mezzo-soprano) are performing and entrance is free of charge.

Easter picnic at Mežaparks

On April 1 at Mežaparks, the Great Stage, an "Easter Picnic" event will take place between 12:00 and 17:00. The folklore and post-folklore bands Daba San and Teikas Muzikanti will be on stage, and educational and entertainment activities will be in place for the whole family.

Swing into spring and summer

On March 31 and April 1 from 11:00 to 20:00 Easter swings will be available in Dome Square, Rātslaukums, Līvu Square, and Bastejkalns. In fact, according to Latvian tradition, you cannot actually expect summer to be a real thing unless you've had a darn good spring swing. Especially relevant for those who want to avoid mosquito bites in the summer. Swinging is not optional, it is compulsory!
