Sabres let Nolan go, keep Irbe on

Take note – story published 9 years and 1 month ago

The Buffalo Sabres fired former Latvian national hockey team coach Ted Nolan from the head coach position after he led them to the NHL’s bottom 30th place for a second year in a row.

However, of Nolan’s team inherited by the management trying to rebuild the struggling franchise in this winter-blessed western New York border town, only Latvian former star-goalie Arturs Irbe will be staying on as head goalie coach.

Meanwhile, All-Star Latvian forward Zemgus Girgensons, who suffered an ankle injury which kept him off the ice for the last six games of the season, said his prime goal at the moment was “to heal the ankle, not a fun injury.”

Asked whether he would be healthy enough to join Latvia’s national team at the Worlds Girgensons said “No. I don’t know yet, that depends on doctors. We’ll see what happens.”

As for Nolan, many experts rule out further prospects for him in the NHL, while another follower on Twitter suggested Latvia was no place for him, either.

At least in Latvia Nolan knows he won't ever be left thankless!
