Six Latvian sporting highlights for August

Sport is currently riding high in Latvia, and with summer in full swing there are plenty more sporting activities to get involved with, whether as a participant or spectator. The LSM sports department has drawn up a list of half a dozen highlights.

Basketball World Cup

The Latvian national team will play its first game in the World Cup final tournament on August 25, but there will be no shortage of exciting events before then with a series of warm-up matches.

Six friendly matches await the national team, and all will be shown live on LTV7 and LSM.lv. The first warm-up match will be already on August 2, when the home team hosts Swedish basketball players in Liepāja. The final composition of the Latvian national team led by head coach Luka Banki has yet to be determined for the World Cup - from 16 in the current squad, only 12 will be chosen to represent the red and white colors.

Women's  Soccer World Cup

In Australia and New Zealand, female footballers are already well into the World Cup final tournament, where the 16 best national teams will start the knockout stages in stadiums full of fans on August 5. The Canadian Olympic champions did not even make it past the group stage, and it is expected that more than one surprise will await on the way to the final on August 20. All major games of the final tournament can be watched live on LTV7 and LSM.lv.

Athletics World Championships

Budapest will host the best track and field athletes from August 19 to 27 at the World Championships, with the best Latvian athletes also present including javelin thrower Līna Mūze-Sirmā. More than 2,000 track and field athletes are expected to participate in the competition at the pupose-built stadium in the capital of Hungary.

It will be possible to follow the competition in the morning and evening sessions live on LTV7 and LSM.lv.

US Open Tennis Championship

The professional tennis bandwagon rolls into the US Open Championship in New York on August 28 to begin to find out who will be awarded the winner's cups of the last of the year's four Grand Slam tournaments, where a place among the participants has also been secured for Latvia's Aļona Ostapenko. Leading up to the US Open, North America will host several high-stakes tennis events, including the ladies competing in 1,000-point tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Left bank v Right bank basketball match

For the 14th time, the 24-hour basketball match will take place in Riga, where teams from the right and left banks of the Daugava river traditionally compete against each other for annual bragging rights.

It will take place on August 19 and 20 in the Esplanade park near the Rainis monument. The match is usually accompanied by a wide entertainment program including DJs and other artists, as well as contests for the spectators. In the past 13 seasons, the right bank of the Daugava has accumulated an 8:5 lead. Maybe this is the year the left bank closes the gap?

You can follow LTV7 and LSM.lv for updates on the progress of the match.

Final of the Latvian championship in beach volleyball

This year, Latvia's beach volleyball players will establish their national pecking order in the Latvian Championships on Majori beach in Jūrmala, where the 16 strongest female and male pairs will compete on the last weekend of August on August 25 to 27.

LTV7 and LSM.lv will provide coverage of the decisive matches.
