Latvian football championship will go down to the wire

The penultimate round of matches in Latvia's senior men's football league, the Virsliga, ensure that next weekend's final matches will decide the season's champions.

With 35 of 26 matches played, two teams are in contention to top the table – Rīga on 87 points and RFS on 86 points. The same two teams met in the Latvian Cup Final a couple of weeks ago, with Rīga eventually lifting the cup after a penalty shootout.

But the current Virsliga standings mean that if Rīga beats reigning champions Valmiera on Saturday, November 11, they will be champions. If they lose or draw, and RFS manages a win against Metta/LU, then RFS will be champions.

For their part, though Valmiera are a long way behind RFS and Rīga on 52 points, they could still seal third place if they beat Rīga. But Valmiera are currenty in fourth place behind FK Auda, who have been perhaps the most-improved team of the season.

FK Auda's victory at Tukums over the weekend (above) guaranteed them at least fourth spot and participation in European competition for the first time ever next season, but they will want to cap their memorable season with a win at home to Daugavpils on Saturday which would see them finish third.

With so many possible permutations, it should add up to a thrilling final round of matches, all of which kick off at 13:00 on Saturday.
