The 55-year-old Banchi has become the 14th head coach of the Latvian national team since the restoration of independence, and will replace Latvian specialist Roberts Stelmahers, who stepped down after Latvia's failure to qualify for the 2022 European Men's Basketball Championships.
Banchi has been signed until the end of the 2023 Basketball World Cup cycle, with the option to terminate his contract if Latvia fails to qualify for the next qualification stage.
Banchi is scheduled to arrive in Latvia for the first time sometime after Easter.
Banchi has coached such clubs as Italian club Milan Emporio Armani, German club Bamberg Brose, Greek club Athens AEK and Russian club Krasnodar Lokomotiv-Kuban.
