Latvian Martins Dukurs begins World Cup season with a silver medal

Latvian skeleton racers opened World Cup season with a race at Lake Placid on December 8, where Martins Dukurs won silver and Tomass Dukurs placed sixth, according to Latvian Television.

Germany's Axel Jungk won the race and Russia's Alexander Tretiakov won bronze, but Germany's Felix Keisinger set a track record finishing his first run in 53.06 seconds.

Tomass Dukurs started fifth. His start time was 4.90 seconds and he completed the run in 53.31 seconds, moving into eight position.

Martins Dukurs started thirteenth. His start time was 4.86 seconds and he completed the run in 53.14 seconds, moving into third place.

In the second run Tomass had a better start time (4.88 seconds), but was slower than in his first run (53.61 seconds). He was 0.60 seconds behind the leader and moved into sixth place.

Martins had a much better start time (4.73 seconds), but was also slower than in his first run (53.30 seconds), but it was enough to guarantee him a medal in the first run. His total run time was 0.12 seconds behind the winner, which moved him into second place.

The second World Cup stage will also take place in Lake Placid next week, before the athletes return to Europe. The first European stage will be in Winterberg in the first week of January.
