Latvia's Olympic hoodoo continues

Latvia was plunged into despair Sunday evening when the men's ice hockey team failed to qualify for the 2018 Winter Olympics - despite having home advantage and a partisan crowd behind them for a crunch game against Germany.

After failing to win a single medal in the recent Rio summer Olympics, the hockey-mad nation was looking for some form of consolation in the form of a reserved ticket to the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

However, it was not to be with Latvia losing 2:3 against a tenacious German team.

The dismal evening was enlivened slightly by a group of hockey fans who unfurled a banner in the closing minutes demanding that Latvian Ice Hockey Federation Kirovs Lipmans be made... well, President.

A couple of days previously, a similar group of fans had been ejected for revealing a banner calling for Lipmans to quit.

Despite expressing a completely opposite message Sunday night (albeit one that might possibly have had an element of sarcasm) the banner wavers were also ejected from the arena, they said via social media.

Germany's victory means that they progress to the Olympics and in the year of Latvia's centenary, 2018, loccal hockey fans will be left watching from afar and wondering "What if..."
