Personnel changes at Latvian National Theater as artistic director Senkovs exits

Theater director Elmārs Senkovs will leave the post of artistic director of the Latvian National Theater, Latvian Television reported August 1.

Previously, in an interview on the LTV program "Rīta Panorāma", the newly appointed director of the theater Māris Vītols admitted that in connection with the change of management of the Latvian National Theater, sentiment among the staff was divided.

"Actually, it can be said that internally, the theater collective is somewhat divided into two camps. One part of the people, including the artistic management, Elmar Senkov and the actors, actively advocated for Jānis Vimba to be retained as the director of the National Theater. The other part of the collective openly expressed the opinion that the theater must change and that the theater needs new management," the new director said.

Regarding the future of the theater, Vītols said that the Latvian National Theater must adapt and adopt a more modern theatrical language, while at the same time promoting Latvian original drama.

"Unfortunately, during the previous management, the theater has started to lose a little of its previous brilliance, if we look at the 2016, 2017 seasons. The theater needs a new breakthrough," said the new director.

Vītols said his planned changes could be described as "national in content, contemporary in form". Vītols, a former politician, was chosen as the director of the Latvian National Theater in an open competition announced in February this year.
