Latvia's visitor numbers up in September

According to the data published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) November 15, in September 2023 the number of non-resident and resident visitors comprised 208.1 thousand, which is 6 % more than in September 2022. Compared to September last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 368 thousand, which is 6.7 % more.

In September 2023 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 59.4 % or 123.5 thousand people, which is 9.9 % more than in September a year ago, but 28.1 % less than in September 2019. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to September 2022, has grown by 11.6 % and comprised 230.8 thousand.

The majority of non-resident visitors came from Lithuania (19.5 thousand), Estonia (13.7 thousand), Germany (13.4 thousand), United Kingdom (11.5 thousand), Finland (7.6 thousand), Poland (6.1 thousand) and the USA (6 thousand).

Mostly non-resident visitors stayed in Riga (74.8 %), Jūrmala (8.6 %), Mārupe municipality (2.7 %), Liepāja (2.3 %), Sigulda municipality (1.7 %), Daugavpils (1.2 %) and Cēsis municipality (1.1 %).

In September 2023, 84.6 thousand resident arrivals were registered at the tourist accommodation establishments, which is 0.7 % more than in September 2022 and 18.7 % more than in September 2019. The number of nights spent by them comprised 137.2 thousand, which is a drop of 0.6 %, compared to September last year.

Mostly residents stayed in Riga (28.8 %), Jūrmala (9.3 %), Liepāja (5.9 %), Cēsis municipality (5.6 %), Sigulda municipality (4.6 %), Daugavpils (3.4 %) and Dienvidkurzeme municipality (3 %).

In Q3 2023 the number of non-resident and resident visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 917.4 thousand, which is 4.6 % more than in Q3 2022. As compared to Q3 2022, the number of nights spent by visitors has risen by 8.6 % and comprised 1.7 million nights. Visitors spent an average of 1.8 nights at tourist accommodation establishments.

In Q3 2023 the number of non-resident visitors comprised 533.5 thousand, which is 11.3 % more than in Q3 2022. The number of nights spent by them has risen by 14.2 % and comprised 996.4 thousand. The number of Latvian residents, in turn, comprised 383.9 thousand, which is 3.5 % less than in Q3 2022. The number of nights spent by them comprised 686.5 thousand, which is a rise of 1.5 %, compared to the respective quarter last year.

In the first nine months of 2023 the number of visitors in Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 1.9 million, which is 13.3 % more than in the nine months of 2022. The number of nights spent by visitors has grown by 14.8 % and comprised 3.5 million nights. Out of all visitors hosted 1.1 million or 57 % were non-residents, but 832.8 thousand or 43 % were residents.
