Covid era fuels growth in online retail sector

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to September 2020, in September 2021 total retail trade turnover rose by 3.9 %. 

Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 1.9 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 7.6 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 5.6 %.

Compared to September 2020, the largest turnover growth was recorded in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 22.6 %), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (11.1 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (10.0 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 9.7 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to August, in September 2021, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises rose by 0.4 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.7 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 0.9 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – increased by 1.6 %.

Compared to August, in September 2021 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) decreased by 5.5 %.
