Hundreds of cyclists gathered in central Rīga Wednesday

Intending to draw attention to the need for safe cycling infrastructure in Riga, suitable for everyone - including children and seniors - several hundred cyclists took part in the annual Critical Mass ride through the capital's city center on May 1.

The event takes place every year in Riga and cyclists said that, unfortunately, infrastructure improvements are slow and the attitude of other road users is not always understanding.

Liene, a participant, said that when cycling with a child, you have to be careful and watch out all the time. "There is no feeling of safety at all," she said.

The association "City for People" emphasized the same. "The bicycle infrastructure should be such that children, elderly people can ride. Not just people like you or me. That's the main thing - safety. If there is no safety, then people die, there are injuries, and that is inevitable. These are not accidents, these are the consequences of the system that is in place in Rīga," said the association's representative Kārlis Krēķis.

Many people on the ride also said that they themselves had been involved in accidents.

Meanwhile, when asked whether the concerns of the association had been heard over the years, Kārlis Krēķis said: "Usually we are heard at elections, when there is an election campaign, which we will see probably next year. After that, somehow everything fades away. And we see this very well in the budget of the City Council."
