Central Rīga Rail Baltica construction delayed

Several street repairs make traffic slower in Rīga. The largest bottlenecks arise in the vicinity of the Central Station and the Central Market, where the ambitious construction work of the railway line Rail Baltica takes place. These works will be delayed by a month and a half, Latvian Radio reported on September 4.

With the beginning of the school year, there is more intensive traffic in the capital. On Monday, September 4, the forenoon traffic was slower in Pārdaugava district, in the vicinity of the Vanšu Bridge, on the Akmens Bridge, around Uzvaras Park and on the 13. janvāra Street, where streets and the surrounding environment have been dug up for months for the Rail Baltica railway project.

The Riga City Council stated that the traffic situation in the capital is similar to that in previous years. These days, the largest bottlenecks are in the vicinity of the station and the Central Market, where the biggest Rail Baltica reconstruction works are taking place.

The deadline was September 15, but the Rīga City Council's Department of Outdoors and Mobility (formerly the Department of Transport) said the jobs had stalled. They will only be completed at the end of October because problems have been discovered underground.

The department announced that repairs on Eksporta Street and Čiekurkalns Line 2 could be resumed this week.

This year, the municipality planned to repair a total of 80 streets, but the council said that fewer would be repaired due to the disciplinary case launched in the summer in the Transport Department, during which the leadership was suspended. The case ended with no result.
