Rīga port to welcome 67 cruise ships this season

Those who crossed the Vanšu Bridge in Rīga or drove the port area on Tuesday, May 7, could not help but notice another cruise ship moored in Riga. The three-hundred-metre ship brought 3,000 passengers to Rīga, who spent one day here. The cruise season is only beginning, with more ships expected in Rīga port in August and September, Latvian Television reported.

67 cruise ships will call at Rīga port this season, and Poesia on Tuesday was the second.

“Poesia” arrived in Riga as early as nine o'clock in the morning, and the busiest travelers were immediately on buses to go to Jūrmala and other excursions.

"We had a three-hour tour of the city. Fantastic. Everything is so clean. And such beautiful houses. We shopped a little bit and now we go to lunch and then back. To the cathedral and old Riga,” the ship's passengers, Friedrich and Catherine, said of their plans.

“Cruise lasts 12 days, tomorrow we travel to Estonia, then to Helsinki, Stockholm, Gothenburg and then back home,” Renata, the ship's passenger, told LTV.

Last year there were 62 calls at the Rīga port. The absolute record was 2022, when ships called at Rīga 99 times.

Due to the width of Daugava, cruise ships of around 300 meters in length can enter Rīga. For larger ones, Rīga is not available. The other challenge is to lure the big ships here in the winter as well.

Last year, two cruise ships docked in Riga for the time of the Old Town Christmas market, five have applied for this year.
