Rīga-Liepāja train might run twice a day in 2024

The fill of trains on daily trips on the Rīga-Liepāja route was 75% in November, passenger carrier Vivi told Latvian Radio December 28. Overall, positive trends are observed, so it is planned that from September 2024 the passenger train on the Rīga-Liepāja route will run twice a day in both directions.

This year, starting on July 31, the daily train service between Liepāja and Rīga was restored, and in the mornings the train runs from Liepāja to Rīga, but in the evenings it travels from Riga to Liepāja.

On the second day of Christmas, December 26, the train from Rīga to Liepāja had an additional journey scheduled in the middle of the day. Sarmīte is from Liepāja, she used the train to go home after celebrating. Sarmīte takes the train whenever possible, although in her opinion the early morning journey from Liepāja to Rīga (at 05:02) is too early, but it is convenient to return from Rīga to Liepāja in the evenings (at 18:34).

in 2024, the Rīga-Liepāja route is planned to change so that the train can run twice a day, Vivi communications and marketing manager Sigita Zviedre said.

"The company is working on capital repairs of diesel trains to increase the availability of rolling stock. We plan to open the second daily trip to and from Liepāja on September 1, 2024," said Zviedre.

"Seat fill on the Liepāja route was 75% in November. In December, 61%, which we value as very good, as in the nine months of 2023 overall, the average train fulfillment reached 53.71%. There have been some cases in November and December where a train had been overly full, but this is only temporary,” Sigita Zviedre said.

What time the second journey would arrive and depart is unclear for now.
