Editor: Oligarch transcripts should be a major scandal

The editor of the magazine responsible for releasing an astounding series of transcripts of conversations between Latvia's so-called "oligarchs" said June 30 that the scandal could not be ignored.

Speaking to LSM on the sidelines of the Lampa conversation festival in Cesis, Nellija Locmele of the Ir news weekly said she had no doubt as to the authenticity of the recordings upon which the transcripts are based and accused one of those involved, Ventspils mayor Aivars Lembergs of out-and-out lying about their veracity.

As previously reported by LSM, the transcripts involve not only Lembergs but other oligarchs including Ainars Slesers and Andris Skele as well as a cast of supporting characters including current Agriculture Minister Janis Duklavs.

Should be a major scandal and would be anywhere to the west of here, but this is Latvia and it doesn't seem that much of the media, as well as many locals I've spoken to, are particularly concerned about it. Today's news, tomorrow's fish and chip paper, as they say.
