Former parliamentary speaker to be ambassador to the Netherlands

On February 26, in Riga Castle, President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, presented a letter of credence to the next Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the Kingdom of The Netherlands – Solvita Āboltiņa.

Solvita Āboltiņa began her career in the diplomatic service in 1993, but in 2002 embarked on a lengthy parliamentary career when she was elected to the 8th Saeima (the Latvian Parliament) from the New Era party. She was subsequently elected to the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th Saeimas for New Era and its successor party, Unity (now New Unity). Solvita Aboltiņa was the Deputy Speaker of the 9th Saeima and the Speaker of the 10th and the 11th Saeima.

From December 2004 until April 2006, she held the post of Minister of Justice and was Speaker of the parliament from 2010 to 2014.

Since August 2018, Solvita Āboltiņa had been posted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to the Italian Republic and Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. She was also the non-resident Ambassador of Latvia to the Republic of Malta, the Republic of San Marino and the Republic of Albania.

Āboltina succeeds the former ambassador, Aiga Liepiņa.
