Latvia's election authority ready for EP elections

The Central Election Commission (CVK) is ready for the upcoming European elections in Latvia on June 8, CVK Chairwoman Kristīne Saulīte said in an interview on the Latvian Television morning newscast on May 9. Election commissions, precincts, and supplies of necessary materials are now in place.

Saulīte said efforts are also being made specifically to tackle cybercrime risks. The situation is monitored and different possible scenarios are modeled. “All types of security are priority number one,” Saulīte noted, while confirming that there are no concerns about the electronic system - its developers and the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs have done well.

In these elections, voters will be able to vote in any precinct. The risk of someone voting multiple times is out because the system shows clearly if a person has already voted.

Voters will also be able to cast their votes three days in advance. “It is recorded in the Constitution that Saeima elections are held in one day, but the European Parliament Law allows to vote early. Would invite everyone to think about it and make their own choices before,“ Saulīte said.

Latvia's citizens will also have access to 50 districts abroad, as well as it will be possible to vote by post. 949 polling stations will operate in Latvia.

Meanwhile, for foreign citizens in Latvia, Thursday, May 9 is the deadline to apply. You can read the steps in our other story.

Unfortunately, finding the relevant information on the CVK website remains a challenge for foreign users. Most of the relevant information is only available in Latvian and some of what is available in English is out of date and misleading: for example, the CVK English website says the European Parliament elections will take place "on the fourth Saturday of May" (the actual date is June 8) and that Latvia will send 8 MEPs to Brussels (it will send 9 MEPs).
