Nearly 8,000 people took the chance to vote in Latvia's Saeima elections on October 3, the first day of "early" voting at selected polling stations ahead of the main voting day on October 6.

According to figures from the Central Election Commission, 7,887 people voted October 3. Latvian Radio even reported seeing lines of voters at some polling stations. Voters at a polling station in Teika, Rīga said that they had decided to cast their votes early because they had travel plans on Saturday.

Activity seemed even higher October 4 with 4,712 confirmed ballots cast by lunchtime.

Early votes will be held securely and added to the main count on October 6. For more information about the mechanics of voting, see our special feature.
