Bēriņa said she would move amendments to the law on the status of deputy of the municipal council.
Currently, the law provides that if the deputy does not visit the meeting of the city or municipality Council three times, the mandate may be revoked by the city or municipality council itself.
As Bērziņa said, if this obligation were imposed on the Central Election Commission (CVK), the deputies who do not work and do not come to the meetings will be able to be replaced by the next deputies who will be ready to work.
Bērziņa was encouraged to move the amendments by the situation in the financially distressed city council of Rēzekne, where coalition deputies do not attend meetings in order to facilitate the dismissal of the city council. Currently, there have not been two consecutive City Council meetings, because members of the ruling party “Together for Latvia” do not attend them.
If the third meeting does not take place, the Saeima will have the right to direct the dismissal of the city council, however, as Bērziņa emphasized, it is not the responsibility of the Saeima, but a right.
The minister said that “it is not like something will collapse” if Rēzekne City Council meetings do not take place because the municipal administration can also continue to work.
She called on non-attending Members to revoke their mandates on their own so that they could be replaced by MPs who would want to work.
