Sigulda City Council signs for dismissal of mayor

Most councilors in Sigulda municipality are demanding the dismissal of the mayor Līga Sausiņa (National Alliance), Latvian Radio reported on Janaury 16.

The reason mentioned is that Sausiņa allegedly puts her personal ambitions above work duties and is unable to perform the work of the local government related to the drawing up of the budget, implementation thereof, and transparency. This is also confirmed by her party members. Sausiņa, meanwhile, calls this a betrayal.

14 out of 19 deputies have signed up for the removal of City Council leader Sausiņa from office. Her resignation has been requested by 7 Council core deputies who have been elected from the joint list of the National Alliance, Latvian Association of Regions, and Latvian Green Party.

Sausiņa's resignation was also signed by her two deputies. One of them is Kristaps Zaļais, who told Latvian Radio that the signals were there for a long time, at least a month. For example, this year's budget is not transparent.

"The state of roads, lighting, festive decor, speech, budget situation, the common position of the local government – a wide variety of aspects. [...] Basically, it touches on both the overall atmosphere and goodwill in the workplace and the overall leadership style, which is distinctly authoritative, and putting personal ambitions above the interests of local government and society," Zaļais said.

Sausiņa became head of the municipality in the fall of 2022. Until then she worked as deputy for nine years. She strongly disagrees with her colleagues' criticisms, on the pretext that work in the municipality is moving forward.

"I don't see the basis for the reproach, but unfortunately I see it as a political decision with traits of treason. If Kristaps [Zaļais] is the spokesman, obviously he's organizing it as well. It's an extremely high level of irresponsibility right now because [it happens] at the time of budgeting. And it is also vile,” said Sausiņa.
