Minister says Rēzekne city council might be sacked

The Rēzekne City Council has submitted a draft budget with a deficit of EUR 1.3 million to the Ministry of Finance, which means that it has failed to fulfill the task of developing a balanced budget. Therefore, Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Inga Bērziņa said that the Saeima might decide to dismiss the council.

Bērziņa said in an interview with the Latvian Television broadcast “Today's Question” on January 23 that on Wednesday, January 24, a meeting of the Financial Stabilization Committee is expected to take stock of the draft budget submitted by Rēzekne municipality, which has a deficit of EUR 1.3 million.

It cannot stay the way it is and Rēzekne has to sort out the budget. “If this is not possible and the city of Rēzekne cannot do so, other decisions will have to be made,” the minister said. “In essence, the tasks assigned to Rēzekne have not been fulfilled.”

“We have to wait for the Committee's decision, but we cannot rule out the option to dismiss the City Council,” Bērziņa said.

Commenting on the situation in the Balvi municipality with a budget hole of EUR 4.8 million, Bērziņa invited to wait for the municipal council's decision, as the mayor has a vision of how this situation could be addressed. It is likely that without financial borrowing it will not resolve the situation.
