December ratings show seven parties remain in the frame

The latest party ratings for December should provoke plenty of conversations – and maybe one or two seasonal arguments – over the Christmas dinner.

The regular SKDS poll conducted for LTV shows that the New Unity party of Prime Minister Evika Siliņa is still top of voters' wish lists – but only just, and has experienced a significant drop over the last month.

The ratings of political parties in December (the survey took place from December 2 to 11) show that when asked "If the Saeima elections were held tomorrow, for which political party would you vote?", 8.3% of respondents answered that New Unity would be their choice.

In second place on 7.8% was another coalition party, the Greens and Farmers Union (ZZS), while third spot was held by the National Alliance on 7.7%.

Next comes Latvia First (LPV) on 7.2%, the Progressives on 6.7%, For Stability! on 5.8% and the United List (AS) on 5.6%.

No other party manages to muster even 3% support and according to projections, the same seven parties that currently constitute the Saeima would all be back in their seats if an election was held tomorrow.

From November to December, New Unity experienced the biggest drop in support, falling 2.8 percentage points. On the other hand, the National Alliance was the biggest gainer, and increased its popularity by 1.5 percentage points.

As always, a huge chunk of the electorate was either undecided (24.6%) or had no intention to vote at all (13.6%), leaving plenty of scope for politicians of all hues to make a new year's resolution to be more attractive to voters.
