Harmony MP Andrejs Elksnins, who has been elected to the Daugavpils City Council as candidate number one on the Harmony ticket, might be nominated for the mayoral office, because Harmony received higher voter support in Latvia’s recent local elections. The local party’s leader Eigims might become vice mayor.
Commenting the agreement reportedly reached between Harmony and Our Party, Elksnins confirmed the news, saying that the two political parties have similar programs and aim for stable teamwork in the long term.
We agreed that we have concurring programs and we can ensure stable, sustainable teamwork in the interests of Daugavpils residents, as well as to analyze the existing contracts with heating and waste management providers for which the residents are overpaying, Elksnins said.
Elksnins will have to put down his MP mandate should he decide to become mayor of Daugavpils.
According to preliminary results, three parties have been voted into the Daugavpils City Council, the Central Election Commission informs.
Those parties are the Latgale Party with 28.57% of the vote, Harmony with 28.16% of the vote, and Our Party with 19.34% of the vote.
Preliminary results suggest no other party made it past the 5% barrier required to be awarded seats at the council.
Lacplesis was the mayor of Daugavpils from 2009 to 2011 when councilors voted for his removal. He reclaimed the seat in 2013.
