Newly married Riga mayor can avoid conflict of interest, says municipal executive

Mayor Nils Ušakovs can continue seeing his newly-wed wife at work without worrying about conflicts of interest since announcing his marriage to office manager Iveta Strautiņa-Ušakova last week, Riga’s municipal executive director Juris Radzevičs told national information agency LETA Thursday.

As long as Ušakovs delegates all decisions regarding the work of the office manager to an official proxy, he can avoid coming into a possible conflict of interest, explained Radzevičs.

Thus the delegated proxy will have to take all decisions regarding Strautiņa-Ušakova’s work, for example when she will be approved to take vacations and similar matters.

Since marrying his long-standing office manager Strautiņa, as announced in a “proud” November 19 tweet, Ušakovs has had to refrain from any decisions regarding their professional relations, now that their personal affairs have been officially formalized in this manner.
