"The President has sent a formal letter to Mrs Straujuma inviting her to form a government,” presidential spokeswoman Liga Krapane told LSM.
The move, which had been anticipated ever since parliamentary elections on October 4, means Straujuma, 63, is set to continue with the same three-party, right-leaning coalition she inherited from previous Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovsis in January.
Coalition talks have filled the weeks since the election meaning that the approval of her cabinet at a parliamentary session most likely on Wednesday or Thursday should be a formality.
She heads a coalition commanding a solid 61-seats in the 100-seat unicameral chamber or Saeima.
