"Clarifications in the translation of the text of the Treaty have been initiated by the Ministry of Justice, taking into account the recommendations of the State Language Center," said a Saeima statement which did not specify exactly which items needed a better translation 20 years after Latvia ratified the Treaty on February 26, 2004, becoming a full member of NATO just over a month later on March 29, 2004..
The precise translation of the Treaty will be published in the "Latvijas Vēstnesis" newspaper in the near future.
The Washington Treaty – or North Atlantic Treaty – forms the basis of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – or NATO and was originally signed in Washington D.C. on 4 April 1949 by 12 founding members.
