Saeima committee approves 'clarifications' of NATO treaty

On Wednesday, April 10, the Saeima's Foreign Affairs Committee approved what were described as "several clarifications in the [Latvian] translation of the text of the North Atlantic Treaty," the foundational document of NATO.

"Clarifications in the translation of the text of the Treaty have been initiated by the Ministry of Justice, taking into account the recommendations of the State Language Center," said a Saeima statement which did not specify exactly which items needed a better translation 20 years after Latvia ratified the Treaty on February 26, 2004, becoming a full member of NATO just over a month later on March 29, 2004..

The precise translation of the Treaty will be published in the "Latvijas Vēstnesis" newspaper in the near future.

The Washington Treaty – or North Atlantic Treaty – forms the basis of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization – or NATO and was originally signed in Washington D.C. on 4 April 1949 by 12 founding members. The Treaty is short – containing only 14 articles – and has never been modified. You can find out more about its history here and read it in full here. If you'd like to proofread the current Latvian version yourself, it is here.
