Culture Minister stays in office after confidence vote

On April 18, the Saeima rejected a motion of no confidence in Culture Minister Agnese Logina (Progressives) requested by the opposition National Alliance (NA).

After just over two hours of debate, 24 MPs voted in favor of Logina's resignation, 66 against.

The National Alliance filed the resignation request because Logina had publicly stated that public media content should continue to be provided in Russian after January 1 2026. The NA stressed that the National Security Concept foresees that as of January 1 2026, Russian-language content will cease to be financed.

According to the NA, the attitude of the Minister of Culture is incompatible with the professional and successful development of the media space in the country.

"The Minister of Culture has expressed her determination not to comply with the National Security Concept, thus calling into question not only the Concept itself, but also the competence of the institutions responsible for national security. It is unacceptable that the security risk assessment is ignored and the information space is endangered, especially in the current security situation," said NA President Raivis Dzintars, earlier justifying the resignation request.
