The highest officials of our country, including President Edgars Rinkēvičs and Prime Minister Evika Siliņa addressed the session, which was also attended by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The extraordinary session took place before the start of the regular Saeima sitting immediately afterwards.
First to speak was President Rinkēvičs who pointed out that Russia's attack on Ukrainian territory goes back much more than two years.
"Unfortunately, the war with Ukraine already started 10 years ago – with the annexation of Crimea, with Western appeasement and turning a blind eye. Two years have passed since the bright morning of February 24 dawned. War began, and not just any war – a war here, in the heart of Europe. Our war. A war in which Ukraine defends not only its land, but also its people. It is a war in which Ukraine also defends democracy and common sense in the world."
He concluded his address with a rallying cry agaist what is sometimes called 'war fatigue' in the West:
"By supporting Ukraine, we are protecting our freedom, and we must do as much as we can, and more. We have supported Ukraine since the first day, but in order to win, Ukraine needs our support in the future, both in deeds and in words. It is impossible to protect freedom too much, because without freedom we will not even have the choice of fatigue. Without freedom we will have no choice at all."
